The First of the Reiwa Era and the First
in Hokkaido: A 33-Meter Tall Five-Storied Wooden Pagoda Constructed Entirely
of Japanese Cypress, to be Completed in October This Year
The Five-Storied Pagoda at the Rose and Memorial Park embodies the elegant style of the early Heian period. Adorned with traditional vermilion and verdigris paints praised in classical poetry, and featuring gracefully curved copper-tiled roofs, it combines strength and beauty in a form befitting the vast northern land.
Standing tall in the northern landscape, this magnificent pagoda will serve as a spiritual sanctuary that resonates in the hearts of all who see it—offering peace, embodying harmony, and continuing to weave its story into the fabric of history for generations to come.
A Path Opens—
From Confusion and
Suffering to the Enlightened Heart of
Compassion
Japan’s First Spiritual Garden
As the rightful successor of the Daigo School of Shingon Buddhism, the Koshoin Rose and Memorial Park has established the "Hokkaido 88 Sacred Sites Pilgrimage." In the vast, untamed land of Hokkaido, this garden was created as a sacred place to receive the teachings of Kobo Daishi, and as the principal spiritual site along the great Ishikari River. Over the course of ten years, this unique spiritual garden—the first of its kind in Japan—was built to honor both the spirits of our ancestors and the sacred essence of the land itself.

Gohyaku Rakan-do
The Grand Hall of 500 Arhats, One of the Largest in Japan
Crowned by a radiant pair of phoenixes soaring for a thousand years, this majestic and sacred hall embodies both beauty and spiritual dignity.
Within, visitors encounter a heartwarming space filled with the compassion and familiarity of the Five Hundred Arhats—figures of deep wisdom and kindness who offer silent comfort to all who enter.
Fudo Goma Gonshu
(Solemn Fire Ritual for Fudō Myo-o)
Fudo Goma Gonshu is a secret Shingon sect esoteric Buddhism ritual that has been practiced for 1200 years since Kobo Daishi brought it back from China. It involves burning goma and offering various prayers to Acala, the principal image of the deity. Barato Cemetery also holds this ritual several times a year.
